DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 PM HST (0900 UTC), the center of Hurricane Karina was located near latitude 18.5 North, longitude 131.7 West. Karina is moving toward the west near 12 mph (19 km/h), and a westward to west-northwestward motion is expected over the next few days. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 145 mph (230 km/h) with higher gusts. Karina is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some additional strengthening is possible through Wednesday morning, followed by slow weakening over the next several days. However, Karina is likely to remain a major hurricane into Thursday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles (205 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 940 mb (27.76 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- None.
