DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
----------------------
At 500 AM HST (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Lowell was located
near latitude 13.4 North, longitude 149.4 West. Lowell is moving
toward the west-northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h). A west to
west-northwest motion is expected to continue during the next
several days.
 
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 80 mph (130 km/h)
with higher gusts.  Rapid strengthening is forecast during the next
day or two, and Lowell is expected to become a major hurricane by
Wednesday night.
 
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles
(150 km).
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 985 mb (29.09 inches).
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND
----------------------
SURF: Swells generated by Lowell are likely to affect portions of
the Hawaiian Islands beginning on Wednesday. These swells are
likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
