DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK

At 800 AM PDT (1500 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Karina was
located near latitude 15.6 North, longitude 117.6 West. Karina is
moving toward the northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h), followed by a
more westerly motion over the next day or two.
 
Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph (100 km/h) with higher
gusts. Strengthening is forecast during the next several days.
Karina is forecast to become a hurricane over the weekend and could
become a major hurricane early next week.
 
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 230 miles (370 km)
from the center.
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 989 mb (29.21 inches).
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

SURF:  Swells generated by Karina will begin to affect portions of
the coast of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula
this weekend.  These swells are likely to cause life-threatening
surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your
