DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK

At 800 PM PDT (0300 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Karina was
located near latitude 17.0 North, longitude 120.2 West. Karina is
moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph (26 km/h). A 
west-northwestward motion with a slightly slower forward speed is 
forecast tonight, followed by a turn to the west on Sunday. 
 
Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher 
gusts. Strengthening is forecast during the next several days. 
Karina is forecast to become a hurricane later tonight and could 
become a major hurricane early next week.
 
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 300 miles (480 km)
from the center.
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 987 mb (29.15 inches).
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND
----------------------
SURF: Swells generated by Karina will begin to affect portions of
the coast of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula this
weekend. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and
rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local
weather office.
