DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK

At 800 PM CVT (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Gonzalo was
located near latitude 16.2 North, longitude 22.7 West. Gonzalo is
moving toward the north near 12 mph (19 km/h). A northward to
north-northwestward motion is expected through tonight, followed by
a slower north-northwestward motion over the weekend. On the
forecast track, the center will pass near the northeastern portion 
of the Cabo Verde Islands tonight and move north of the Cabo Verde 
Islands on Saturday. 
 
Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts.
Little change in strength is expected tonight. Weakening is 
expected to begin by Saturday morning and continue through the 
weekend. Gonzalo is forecast to become a post-tropical remnant 
low by Sunday. 
 
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles (335 km) 
primarily to the northeast of the center. The official observing 
station on Sal in the Cabo Verde Islands recently reported a 
sustained wind of 31 mph (50 km/h) with a gust to 43 mph (69 km/h).
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 1000 mb (29.53 inches).

WIND: Tropical storm conditions will continue over portions of
the Cabo Verde Islands tonight.
 
RAINFALL: Tropical Storm Gonzalo is expected to produce rainfall 
totals of 1 to 3 inches (25 to 75 mm) across the eastern portions of 
the islands of Cabo Verde on Friday and Saturday with less than 1 
inch anticipated for the western side of the island chain. Across 
coastal areas of Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, and Senegal, rain bands east 
of Gonzalo’s track will produce another 1 to 2 inches of rainfall 
(25 to 50 mm) with isolated higher amounts along the immediate 
coast. 
 
SURF: Swells generated by the storm are expected to affect the Cabo
Verde Islands through Saturday. These swells are likely to cause
life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult
