DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 AM HST (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Lowell was located near latitude 12.9 North, longitude 146.5 West. Lowell is moving toward the west near 13 mph (20 km/h). A motion between west and west-northwest is expected for the next few days. Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph (100 km/h) with higher gusts. Rapid intensification is forecast over the next 48 hours, and Lowell is expected to become a major hurricane by Wednesday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 995 mb (29.39 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by Lowell are likely to affect portions of the Hawaiian Islands beginning around mid-week. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local weather office.
