DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
----------------------
At 500 PM HST (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Lowell was located
near latitude 13.5 North, longitude 151.2 West. Lowell is moving
toward the west near 10 mph (17 km/h). A west to west-northwest
motion is expected to continue during the next several days.
 
Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph (215 km/h) with higher 
gusts.  Lowell is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson 
Hurricane Wind Scale. Some fluctuations in intensity are possible, 
but additional strengthening is forecast. Lowell is expected to 
remain a major hurricane for the next few days.
 
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles
(150 km).
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 953 mb (28.15 inches).
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

SURF: Swells generated by Lowell are likely to affect portions of
the Hawaiian Islands beginning on Wednesday. These swells are
likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
