DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
----------------------
At 500 PM HST (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Karina was located
near latitude 17.1 North, longitude 123.8 West. Karina is moving
toward the west near 9 mph (15 km/h) and this motion is expected to
continue through the day on Monday. A turn toward the west-northwest
is forecast Monday night into Tuesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 125 mph (205 km/h) with higher
gusts. Karina is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson
Hurricane Wind Scale. Some additional strengthening is possible over
the next day or so.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles
(205 km).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 954 mb (28.17 inches).


HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

SURF: Swells generated by Karina will affect portions of the coast
of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula for the next
couple of days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening
surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your
local weather office.
