FOUR TROPICAL STORMS AND ONE TROPICAL DEPRESSION FORMED IN THE
ATLANTIC BASIN DURING THE MONTH OF AUGUST.  TWO OF THESE
STORMS...DANIELLE AND EARL...BECAME MAJOR HURRICANES.  THE NUMBER
OF NAMED STORMS WAS EQUAL TO THE LONG-TERM (1944-2009) AVERAGES OF 4
TROPICAL STORMS AND 2 HURRICANES...BUT ABOVE THE AVERAGE OF ABOUT 1
MAJOR HURRICANE.  IN TERMS OF ACCUMULATED CYCLONE ENERGY...ACE...
WHICH MEASURES THE COMBINED STRENGTH AND DURATION OF TROPICAL
STORMS AND HURRICANES...TROPICAL CYCLONE ACTIVITY IN AUGUST WAS
ABOUT 60 PERCENT ABOVE NORMAL.

SO FAR THIS SEASON...OVERALL TROPICAL CYCLONE ACTIVITY TO DATE IS
ABOUT 50 PERCENT ABOVE THE LONG-TERM MEAN.
