DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 500 PM HST (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Miriam was located near latitude 14.4 North, longitude 140.6 West. Miriam is moving toward the west near 8 mph (13 km/h). A turn toward the northwest with a decrease in forward speed is expected tonight, followed by a turn toward the north on Friday that will continue into Saturday. Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Some additional strengthening is possible during the next 24 hours. Miriam is expected to begin weakening on Friday as it encounters strong upper-level winds and cooler waters. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 988 mb (29.18 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- None.
