Tropical Weather Discussion for the eastern Pacific Ocean from
03.4S to 30N, east of 120W including the Gulf of California, and
from the Equator to 30N, between 120W and 140W. The following
information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations,
radar, and meteorological analysis.
Based on 1200 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through
1500 UTC.
...SPECIAL FEATURES...
Gulf of Tehuantepec Gale Warning: Gale force winds are ongoing
across the Tehuantepec region and downwind to about about 14N
with seas up to 12 ft. Fresh to strong N to NE winds associated
with this gap wind event, and seas 8 ft or greater are reaching
as far south as 11N99W this morning. Gale conditions will diminish
by late this morning, then winds and seas will continue to decrease
tonight into Wed.

...INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/MONSOON TROUGH...
A surface trough extends from 08N82W to 05N98W. The ITCZ continues
from 05N98W to 04N120W to 04N140W. A second ITCZ is south of the
Equator and runs from 04S93W to beyond 06S120W. Scattered moderate
to isolated strong convection can be found 03N to 08N E of 100W
to the coast of Colombia. Scattered moderate convection is noted
from 03N to 06N between 100W and 120W.
...OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO...

Aside from the Gale Warning in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, a weak
ridge extends along the offshore waters of Baja California. This
pattern supports moderate to locally fresh NW to N winds from
Cabo San Lazaro northward offshore Baja California. Winds are
mainly light to gentle across the remainder of the waters away
from the Gulf of Tehuantepec, including in the Gulf of California.
Seas are mainly 5 to 6 ft away from the Gulf of Tehuantepec in a
mix of S and NW swells, with seas 3 ft or less in the Gulf of
California.
For the forecast, gale conditions in the Gulf of Tehuantepec will
diminish by late this morning, then winds and seas will continue
to decrease tonight into Wed. Moderate to locally fresh NW winds
and moderate seas are expected off Baja California through Thu
night. Winds may pulse to strong speeds N of Punta Eugenia at
times through Thu evening. Moderate to fresh SW winds may develop
in the northern Gulf of California Fri night ahead of a cold
front approaching Baja California Norte, then to fresh to strong
Sat night. Winds will be moderate or weaker elsewhere through the
next several days. Little change in seas is forecast through the
week.
....OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA,
AND WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR...
Fresh to locally strong gap winds are blowing across the Gulf of
Papagayo and downwind to 89W. Seas are 5 to 6 ft with these
winds. Farther east, moderate N winds and 3 to 4 ft seas are
present in the Gulf of Panama. Light to gentle winds and moderate
seas dominate the remainder of the offshore forecast waters.
For the forecast, fresh to locally strong gap winds are expected
during the nighttime and early morning hours in the Papagayo
region and downwind to about 89W through the forecast period.
Moderate to locally fresh northerly winds are forecast in the
Gulf of Panama through the forecast period. The ongoing gap wind
event in the Tehuantepec region will produce seas to 9 ft in the
far offshore waters of Guatemala through today. Light to gentle
winds and moderate seas will prevail elsewhere.
...REMAINDER OF THE AREA...
A weak cold front extends from 30N134W to 25N140W. Seas to 8 ft
follow the front. E of front, a 1020 mb high pressure located
near 35N125W extends a ridge across the remainder of the N
waters, particularly N of 20N and W of 110W. Gentle to moderate
winds and moderate seas are noted under the influence of the
ridge. The pressure gradient between the ridge an lower pressures
in the vicinity of the ITCZ supports moderate to locally fresh
winds in the trade wind zone, mainly W of 125W with seas of 5 to
7 ft. Elsewhere, moderate or weaker winds and moderate seas are
prevalent.
For the forecast, the cold front will continue to move SE as it
weakens, and seas behind the front will subside later today.
Continuing high pressure will support moderate to locally fresh
easterly winds and moderate to locally rough seas across the
trade wind zone through the forecast period, supporting seas to
around 7 ft.
