DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
----------------------
At 500 PM HST (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Miriam was located
near latitude 16.5 North, longitude 141.6 West. Miriam is moving
toward the north near 8 mph (13 km/h) and this general motion is
expected to continue through early Saturday, with a slight increase
in forward speed. A gradual turn toward the northwest is expected
later Saturday and Sunday.
 
Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher
gusts. Some weakening is forecast during the next 24 hours, with
rapid weakening expected Saturday and Sunday. Miriam is expected to
become a post-tropical remnant low on Sunday.
 
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles
(150 km).
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 982 mb (29.00 inches).
