Interests in the Azores should monitor the progress of Helene. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 500 PM AST (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Helene was located near latitude 21.4 North, longitude 36.7 West. Helene is moving toward the north near 14 mph (22 km/h). A turn toward the northeast with an increase in forward speed is expected during the next few days. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual weakening is forecast over the next couple of days, and Helene is expected to become a tropical storm on Thursday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 980 mb (28.94 inches).
