SUMMARY OF 200 AM MST...0900 UTC...INFORMATION ---------------------------------------------- LOCATION...14.6N 110.3W ABOUT 500 MI...810 KM SW OF CABO CORRIENTES MEXICO ABOUT 575 MI...925 KM S OF THE SOUTHERN TIP OF BAJA CALIFORNIA MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...145 MPH...230 KM/H PRESENT MOVEMENT...N OR 350 DEGREES AT 12 MPH...19 KM/H MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...935 MB...27.61 INCHES WATCHES AND WARNINGS -------------------- There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Interests in southern portions of the Baja California peninsula should monitor the progress of Sandra. Tropical storm or hurricane watches may be required for portions of this area later today. DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 200 AM MST (0900 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Sandra was located near latitude 14.6 North, longitude 110.3 West. Sandra is moving toward the north near 12 mph (19 km/h), and a turn toward the north-northeast is expected on Friday. On the forecast track, the center of Sandra could pass near Socorro Island later today or Friday morning. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 145 mph (230 km/h) with higher gusts. Sandra is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. No significant change in strength is expected today, but weakening should begin on Friday. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 935 mb (27.61 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- None.
