DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 400 AM CDT (0900 UTC), the center of Hurricane Blanca was located near latitude 11.9 North, longitude 104.9 West. Blanca has been drifting toward the southwest during the past few hours. The hurricane is expected to begin moving toward the northwestward with an increase in forward speed today, and this motion should continue through Friday night. Satellite data indicate that the maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 125 mph (205 km/h) with higher gusts. Blanca is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some restrengthening is forecast during the next day or so. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 950 mb (28.06 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by Blanca will begin affecting portions of the coast of southwestern Mexico during the next couple of days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local weather office.
