Gulf of Tehuantepec Gale Warning: North to northeast gale-force winds of 30 to 35 kt will begin across the Gulf of Tehuantepec late tonight, 27/0600 UTC. Gales are forecast to continue until about midday Wed, with fresh to strong winds prevailing across the region through Thu afternoon. Seas will build 8 to 11 ft late tonight into Thu. A surface trough extends from Panama near 09N80W to 09N97W to 09N112W. The ITCZ extends from 09N112W to 08N128W to beyond 06N140W. Scattered moderate convection is from 05N to 12N and W of 102W and from 02N to 06N E of 80W. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO A weakening cold front is beginning to approach from the NW. Ahead of the front, mainly gentle winds prevail across the Mexican offshore waters. Seas are 4 to 6 ft, except 6 to 8 ft offshore Baja California Norte and 1 to 3 ft in the Gulf of California. Patches of haze are possible offshore S Mexico due to nearby persistent agricultural fires. For the forecast, gale-force northerly winds are expected across the Gulf of Tehuantepec late tonight through Wed morning. Fresh to strong northerly winds will continue through Thu afternoon in this region. Meanwhile, gentle to moderate northerly winds will prevail across the Baja California offshores through Thu, increasing to fresh by Thu night. The long- period NW swell will prevail NW of Punta Eugenia through the end of the week. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, and WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR Light to gentle mainly N winds prevail N of the surface trough, with gentle to moderate S winds to the S. Seas of 4-6 ft are noted across the Central American offshores as well as the South American offshores. These seas are within a moderate S to SW swell. Patches of haze are possible offshore of Guatemala and El Salvador due to nearby persistent agricultural fires. For the forecast, long-period moderate S to SW swell will persist across the region through the week. Fresh easterly winds will begin near the Papagayo region and offshore Nicaragua on Wed afternoon, and increase to fresh to strong Wed night into early Thu morning. Fresh winds will continue in that area on Thu and Fri. REMAINDER OF THE AREA Moderate to fresh trades prevail N of the ITCZ and W of 125W. Long- period NW to N swell throughout this area is producing seas of 8-10 ft. Gentle to moderate winds along with seas of 5-7 ft seas due to long-period S to SW swell are noted elsewhere. For the forecast, the long-period NW to N swell will gradually decay through tonight, which will allow for seas to subside through Thu.
