000 AXPZ20 KNHC 232127 TWDEP Tropical Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 2205 UTC Sat Apr 23 2022 Tropical Weather Discussion for the eastern Pacific Ocean from 03.4S to 30N, east of 120W including the Gulf of California, and from the Equator to 30N, between 120W and 140W. The following information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations, radar, and meteorological analysis. Based on 1800 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through 2130 UTC. ...INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/MONSOON TROUGH... A surface trough extends from the Costa Rica coast at 09N84W across 08N97W to 09N111W. An ITCZ continues from 09N111W through 06N125W to beyond 03N140W. Scattered moderate convection is seen from 04N to 12N between 101W and 120W. Scattered moderate to isolated strong convection is noted from 03N to 07N between 121W and 140W. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO A surface ridge continues to dominate the offshore waters of Baja California and central Mexico. The pressure gradient between the ridge and relatively lower pressures over Mexico is supporting fresh NW to N winds along with 8 to 12 ft seas in long-period NW swell across the waters W and SW of the Baja California peninsula. Light and variable winds with 5 to 6 ft seas in S swell are over the S Mexico offshore waters. Gentle to moderate winds with seas at 1 to 3 ft are present in the Gulf of California. Patchy haze is possible offshore from central and S Mexico due to nearby persistent agricultural fires. For the forecast, fresh NW to N winds will persist offshore W of Baja California through late Sun afternoon before gradually subsiding to between gentle and moderate by Mon morning. Long- period NW swell will sustain seas of 9 to 12 ft W and SW of Baja California through early Sun morning, then slowly subside through Mon. Strong to near-gale N winds are expected in the Gulf of Tehuantepec region Tue night through Thu. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, and WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR Gentle to moderate S to WSW winds exist over the waters between Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, and offshore waters of Costa Rica and Panama. Seas of 5 to 7 ft in southerly swell prevail across all offshore waters. Patchy haze is possible offshore of Guatemala and El Salvador due to nearby persistent agricultural fires. For the forecast, periodic showers and thunderstorms will continue to impact offshore waters of Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia through Mon morning. Fresh easterly winds are probable near the Papagayo region and Offshore Nicaragua near midweek next week. Long-period moderate S to SW swell will persist across the region through most of next week. REMAINDER OF THE AREA A broad surface ridge reaches southeastward from a 1032 mb high off the S California coast to off the central Mexican coast near 14N111W. This feature is supporting moderate to fresh N to NE winds N of 05N between 128W and 140W, and N of 10N between 118W and 128W. Under the influence of long-period NW swell, seas in both areas are 8 to 11 ft, except the NW corner which are 6 to 8 ft. Gentle to moderate winds with 5 to 7 ft seas in southerly swell are found elsewhere. For the forecast, the long-period NW swell will continue to propagate southeastward across the basin through Sun, and begin to subside on Mon. Seas of 8 to 12 ft will linger N of 5N W of 105W through Sun night before diminishing Mon. The southerly swell should sustain 5 to 7 ft seas across the remainder of the basin through most of next week. $$ Chan
