000 AXPZ20 KNHC 231646 AAA TWDEP Tropical Weather Discussion...Updated NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 1605 UTC Sat Apr 23 2022 Tropical Weather Discussion for the eastern Pacific Ocean from 03.4S to 30N, east of 120W including the Gulf of California, and from the Equator to 30N, between 120W and 140W. The following information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations, radar, and meteorological analysis. Based on 1200 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through 1600 UTC. ...INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/MONSOON TROUGH... A surface trough extends from the Costa Rica coast at 09N84W across 08N100W to 08N115W. Scattered moderate convection is seen from 04N to 09N between the Panama/Costa Rica coast to 94W, and from 04N to 13N between 101W and 115W. An ITCZ continues from 08N100W through 06N125W to beyond 05N140W. Scattered moderate to isolated strong convection is noted up to 90 nm from either side of the ITCZ. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO A ridge maintains control of the weather regime of the offshore forecast waters of Baja California. The pressure gradient between the ridge and relatively lower pressures over Mexico is supporting moderate to fresh NW-N winds over the waters west of the Baja California peninsula. Light and variable winds are over the remainder of the offshore waters. Gentle to moderate winds are over the Gulf of California. NW swell over the waters off Baja California Norte is bringing seas to 12 ft north of 29N. Areas of haze are offshore the coast of Mexico south of Cabo Corrientes due to nearby persistent agricultural fires. For the forecast, Offshore NW to N winds, fresh to locally strong W of Baja California Sur, and fresh W of Baja California Norte will persist through late this afternoon. These winds should gradually subside to between gentle and moderate by Sun morning. Long- period NW swell will sustain seas of 9 to 12 ft W and SW of Baja California through Sun morning, then slowly subside through Mon. Strong to near-gale N winds are expected in the Gulf of Tehuantepec region Tue night through Wed night. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, and WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR Gentle to moderate SE to S winds prevail over the waters between Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, with light to gentle winds elsewhere. Seas are 5-7 ft in a S to SW swell, reaching 7 ft between Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. Haze is possible over the offshore waters of Guatemala and El Salvador due to nearby persistent agricultural fires. For the forecast, fresh easterly winds are expected near the Papagayo region and Offshore Nicaragua until early this afternoon. Long- period moderate S to SW swell will persist across the region through midweek next week. Showers and thunderstorms will continue to impact offshore waters of Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia through late Sun afternoon. REMAINDER OF THE AREA High pressure ridging, anchored by a strong high center of 1031 N of the area near 34N136W, continues over the waters N of 20N. The pressure gradient between the area of high pressure and lower pressure in the vicinity of the ITCZ is supporting mainly fresh NE trade winds N of the ITCZ to near 25N and west of about 121W. Gentle to moderate winds remain elsewhere. NW swell is propagating across the discussion waters, with seas greater than 8 ft covering the waters northwest of a line from 30N116W to 24N114W to 05N140W. Seas are peaking to 13 ft N of 27N between 121W- 126W. Seas are 5-7 ft elsewhere. For the forecast, the long-period NW swell will continue to propagate southeastward across the forecast waters through the weekend. Seas greater than 8 ft will cover much of the forecast waters west of 105W by Sun night, then begin to decay on Mon. $$ Chan
