Gulf of Tehuantepec Gale Warning: The pressure gradient between high pressure over the Gulf of Mexico and lower pressure within the eastern north Pacific monsoon trough is supporting gale-force gap winds over the Gulf of Tehuantepec through early today. Through the weekend, winds are forecast to remain fresh to strong. Seas will peak near 11 ft in the morning. The monsoon trough extends from 04N77W to 06N90W. The ITCZ continues from 06N90W to 07N115W to 09N127W. It then resumes from 10N133W to beyond 09N140W. Scattered moderate convection is noted from 07N to 12N between 114W and 122W and from 09N to 14N between 124W and 129W. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO Please see the Special Features section above for details on the ongoing gale-force gap wind event in the Gulf of Tehuantepec. N to NE gale-force winds will continue in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, with seas building to 11 ft this morning. Moderate to locally fresh NW winds are along the southern Gulf of California, the entrance of the gulf and south of Cabo San Lazaro. Elsewhere, a weak pressure gradient prevails, supporting mainly light to gentle winds E of 96W. Seas are in the 4-5 ft range over the open waters off Mexico, and 1-4 ft over the Gulf of California. On the forecast, the gale gap winds in the Gulf of Tehuantepec will drop below gale early in the morning, then strong winds will remain in the region before diminishing to moderate speeds Sun morning. Moderate to locally fresh NW winds at the entrance of the Gulf of California, and the southern Gulf of California will prevail through Sun. Moderate to locally fresh winds will develop over the waters west of the Baja California peninsula through Sun night. Light and gentle winds return west off the Pacific coast of Baja California on Monday before the next cold front enters the area Tuesday. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, and WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR Fresh to strong NE winds, and seas to 8 ft, prevail over the Gulf of Papagayo. Gentle winds are elsewhere north of the monsoon trough. Gentle to moderate winds are south of the monsoon trough. Seas are in the 4-6 ft range. For the forecast, the fresh to strong NE winds in the Papagayo region will prevail through Tue night. Gentle to moderate S to SW winds are expected S of the monsoon trough through early next week. Moderate winds will impact the Gulf of Panama today. REMAINDER OF THE AREA... A 1021 mb high pressure centered near 28N120W remains in control across the waters north of 20N. The tight pressure gradient between this area of high pressure and low pressure in the vicinity of the ITCZ is supporting moderate to fresh winds north of the ITCZ to near 20N and west of 120W. Light to gentle winds are over the waters north of 20N, except W of 130W where moderate to fresh NE winds are noted along a surface trough near 22N129W to 09N131W.
