Gulf of Tehuantepec Gale Warning: Strong high pressure building in the wake of a cold front moving across the eastern Gulf of Mexico southwest into the Bay of Campeche is supporting a gap wind event in the Tehuantepec region. Gale force N to NE winds with seas to 12 ft are already in place and are forecast to reach 40 kt early on Sun. Gale winds are forecast to be continuous through early Wed with seas building to 18 ft Sun night into Mon. Mariners transiting this region should exercise caution. The ITCZ extends from 05N90W to 03N115W TO 03N140W. Scattered moderate isolated strong convection is from 01N to 07N W of 92W. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO... See the Special Features section above about a Gale Warning for the Gulf of Tehuantepec region. Moderate to fresh NW winds prevail west of the Baja California peninsula, except for pulses of fresh to strong winds N of Punta Eugenia, which are forecast to continue through Sun morning. Large long-period NW swell is along the Baja California offshore waters supporting seas in the 8-12 ft range with the highest seas currently N of Punta Eugenia. NW winds will slightly diminish to mainly moderate Sun through Mon while the NW swell gradually subside. Moderate to fresh NW winds will resume off the Baja California peninsula by Mon evening while new long period NW swell enter the region. Seas in the 8 to 13 ft range are expected with this second swell event, which will continue to propagate SE through early next weekend. Otherwise, gentle to moderate winds are expected in the Gulf of California, and the offshore waters west of southern Mexico, except in the vicinity of the Gulf of Tehuantepec. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, and WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR... Fresh to strong NE to E winds will continue across the Papagayo region through next week. Winds will increase to near 25 to 30 kt tonight, with seas building to 8-11 ft through next week as strong high pressure builds over the western Caribbean Sea. Fresh to locally strong northerly winds are forecast in the Gulf of Panama through Wed, with downwind seas building to 7-8 ft. Light to gentle winds with seas in the 3-5 ft range will prevail elsewhere through the middle of next week. REMAINDER OF THE AREA... Surface high pressure anchored by a 1025 mb high near 30N132W extends a ridge S-SE to 112W and N of 10N. This is supporting fresh to locally strong NE to E winds between the ITCZ and 20N W of 120W. Seas are 8-13 ft over the NW waters, and a continuation of NW swell for several days will keep seas fairly high through the weekend over much of the area, highest over the NW waters.
