Gulf of California Gale Warning: Strong high pressure across the Great Basin region Wed and Wed night will build southward into NW Mexico and the Gulf of California. Strong northerly winds are expected to blast quickly into northern portions of the Gulf of California early Thu morning and gradually spread southward into central portions of the Gulf. Northerly winds will briefly reach gale force north of 30N Thu morning. Seas will quickly build to 6-9 ft as the wind surge spreads southward across the Gulf. A surface trough extends from 07N78W to 04N95W. The ITCZ continues from 04N95W to 06N114W to 03N119W to beyond 04N140W. Scattered moderate convection is noted from 04N to 10N between 104W and 115W. Scatterometer data shows mostly gentle to moderate northerly winds west of Baja California, and seas are estimated to be in the 5-6 ft range. Strong northerly winds across the Gulf of Tehuantepec will continue overnight. Strong northwest winds to near gale force will blast across the northern Gulf of California early Thu, and spread southward. Large northerly swell will dominate the waters west of Baja California Norte through the weekend. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, and WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR... Scatterometer data shows fresh winds across and downwind of the Gulf of Papagayo, where seas are estimated to be 7-8 ft. Moderate to fresh winds are presumed to be occurring downwind of the Gulf of Panama, with light to gentle winds prevailing elsewhere. Seas are 6-7 ft downwind of the Gulf of Panama, and 5-6 ft elsewhere. Offshore gap winds will pulse to strong across the Gulf of Papagayo region each night through the weekend. Fresh northerly winds will pulse to strong across the Gulf of Panama through Wed night. Light to gentle winds will prevail elsewhere. REMAINDER OF THE AREA... Strong high pressure well north of the forecast area extends a ridge southward into the subtropics. The pressure gradient south of the high pressure and lower pressures in the vicinity of the ITCZ is supporting fresh to locally strong trades north of the ITCZ west of 130W. Gentle to moderate winds prevail elsewhere, except downwind of the Gulfs of Tehuantepec and Papagayo, from roughly 07N to 13N between 95W and 110W, where winds are fresh to strong.
