000 AXPZ20 KNHC 090907 TWDEP Tropical Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 1005 UTC Tue Jun 9 2020 Tropical Weather Discussion for the eastern Pacific Ocean from the Equator to 32N, east of 140W. The following information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations, radar, and meteorological analysis. Based on 0600 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through 0900 UTC. ...INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/MONSOON TROUGH... The monsoon trough extends from 10N75W to 08N84W to 14N96W to 09N121W. The ITCZ continues from 09N121W to beyond 05N140W. A cluster of moderate to strong convection is noted from 07N to 11N between 98W and 101W. Scattered moderate to isolated strong convection is observed elsewhere from 09N to 11N between 98W and 110W, from 05N to 10N between 85W and 94W, and from 04N to 07N W of 135W. Clusters of moderate to isolated strong convection are over parts of the Gulf of Panama, and just off the coasts of West Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO... A ridge will dominate the offshore forecast waters of Baja California during the next several days producing gentle to moderate NW to N winds. The pressure gradient will tighten some Fri night through Sat night between a 1030 mb high pressure located NW of the area and lower pressures over the SW CONUS and NW Mexico. This will support fresh to locally strong NW winds mainly N of Punta Eugenia, with seas building to 8-9 ft. Currently, a NW swell event, with seas in the 8-11 ft range, continues to propagate across the waters N of Cabo San Lazaro. Seas will gradually subside to less than 8 ft late today. In the northern Gulf of California, moderate to fresh NW to N winds will prevail today, with seas of 3-5 ft. Elsewhere across the Gulf, mainly gentle to moderate winds are expected during the next several days. Looking ahead, a gap wind event is forecast across the Tehuantepec region beginning late Thu as a ridge builds across the the eastern slopes of the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico and the western Gulf of Mexico. Strong to near gale force northerly winds are expected to persist Thu night through Sun night, with seas likely building to 10-13 ft. There is a chance of winds reaching minimal gale force at night. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, AND WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR... Mainly gentle to moderate S to SW winds will prevail across the offshore waters. Winds off East Panama and Colombia will increase to 15 to 20 kt today and tonight. Cross equatorial SW swell will continue to propagate across the region, with seas building 8-9 ft between Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands today. Similar wave heights, associated with the same swell event, are forecast to reach the offshore waters of West Panama and Costa Rica tonight into Wed, including also the Azuero Peninsula and the entrance to the Gulf of Panama. REMAINDER OF THE AREA... A ridge extends from a high pressure of 1029 mb located near 34N132W toward Clarion Island. The pressure gradient between the ridge and lower pressures in the vicinity of the ITCZ continues to support an area of moderate to fresh trade winds from 10N to 20N west of 130W. Recent altimeter satellite data show seas of 8-9 ft, likely in mixed NE and SW swell. The ridge is expected to weaken into mid week as a weakening cold front approaches 30N140W. This will allow the trade winds to diminish slightly today but the development of a weak trough along the ITCZ west of 130W will keep the gradient tight enough to support fresh to locally strong trades winds between 10N and 20N west of 130W into late week, with seas of 8 to 9 ft in a mix of swell and shorter period NE wind waves. A reinforcing group of southerly swell is reaching the equator, and will propagate across the waters south of 10N between 90W and 110W through Thu. $$ GR
