205 AXPZ20 KNHC 232111 TWDEP Tropical Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 2205 UTC Sat May 23 2020 Tropical Weather Discussion for the eastern Pacific Ocean from the Equator to 32N, east of 140W. The following information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations, radar, and meteorological analysis. Based on 1800 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through 1940 UTC. ...INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/MONSOON TROUGH... The monsoon trough extends from 10N74W TO 09.5N97W to low pres near 12N109.5W to low pres near 09N120W to low pres near 09.5N131W. The ITCZ continues from 09N132W to beyond 08N140W. Scattered moderate to strong convection is noted from 04.5N TO 10N between 93W and 103W. Scattered moderate isolated strong convection is noted from 06.5N TO 12N between 108W and 125W, and from 07.5N TO 11.5N between 137W and 140W. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO... A trough across the northern Gulf of California along 113.5W is maintaining moderate to fresh SW winds east of this trough, where seas are 3-4 ft. Gentle to moderate south to southwest winds and seas of 3 ft or less prevail across the remainder of the Gulf of California. A ridge extends from near 31N135W southeastward to the Revillagigedo Islands to 17N108W. Moderate NW-N winds and 4-7 ft seas prevail N of 20N. Gentle to moderate NW to N winds prevail S of 20N along with 4-6 ft seas. Agricultural fires in Mexico continue to produce hazy skies from near the Tehuantepec region all the way to NW Mexico. Little change in marine conditions is expected from the weekend through the middle of next week as the broad high pressure prevails. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, AND WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR... Light to gentle winds persist off Central America, with gentle to moderate SW winds farther south off Colombia and Ecuador. Wave heights are 4-6 ft in SW swell. An active monsoon trough will lead to moderate SW winds along with scattered showers and thunderstorms over the offshore waters of southern Central America and Colombia. Elsewhere, generally gentle to moderate breezes will continue through the next few days. Moderate long-period SW swell will continue through the middle of next next week with seas building to near 8 ft SW of the Galapagos Islands early next week. REMAINDER OF THE AREA... A ridge extends from 1028 mb high pressure near 31N135W to across the Revillagigedo Islands to 17N108W. Mainly moderate trades prevail except locally fresh from 09N to 17N between 127W and 140W, where corresponding seas are mainly 6-9 ft. Several weak low pressure centers remain along the monsoon trough, producing active convection, with winds around 20 kt and seas 6-8 ft. Fresh to strong northerly winds offshore of southern California are sending fresh northerly swell of 7-8 ft into the waters roughly N of 27N and E of 125W which will continue through Sun, decaying thereafter. Southerly flow to the south of the monsoon trough may strengthen to moderate to fresh late this weekend into early next week allowing for a growing area of 8-10 ft seas early next week, aided by new long period SW swell. Meanwhile, the ridge will breakdown and shift W early next week as weak surface troughing develops across the N central waters, with broad cut-off low pressure developing along the troughing in the vicinity of 25N130W. Winds W of the troughing may increase to moderate to fresh helping to build seas to around 8 ft early next week. $$ Stripling
