000 AXPZ20 KNHC 230152 TWDEP Tropical Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 0405 UTC Sat May 23 2020 Tropical Weather Discussion for the eastern Pacific Ocean from the Equator to 32N, east of 140W. The following information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations, radar, and meteorological analysis. Based on 0000 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through 0200 UTC. ...INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/MONSOON TROUGH... The monsoon trough extends from 09N83W to 10N95W to 1011 mb low pressure near 12N110W to 09N120W to 1011 mb low pressure near 10N129W. The ITCZ continues from 10N129W to 08N140W. Scattered moderate and isolated strong convection is noted N of 06N between 78W and 84W, from 05N to 10N between 90W and 100W, from 05N to 09N between 101W and 110W, from 10N to 13N between 109W and 112W, and from 09N to 11N between 112W and 118W. Scattered moderate convection is noted from 09N to 12N between 125W and 130W. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO... A ridge extends from near 32N137W southeastward to the Revillagigedo Islands to 15N115W. Moderate NW-N winds and 4-7 ft seas prevail N of 20N, except southerly winds and seas 3 ft or less in the Gulf of California. Gentle to moderate onshore winds prevail S of 20N along with 4-6 ft seas. Agricultural fires in Mexico continue to produce haze from near the Tehuantepec region all the way to NW Mexico. A trough moving through Baja California is expected to produce strong SW gap winds into the northern Gulf of California this evening through early Sat, where seas will build to around 6 ft. Otherwise, little change in marine conditions is expected through the weekend through the middle of next week. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, AND WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR... Light to gentle winds persist off Central America, with gentle to moderate SW winds farther south off Colombia and Ecuador. Wave heights are in the 4-6 ft in SW swell. Some patchy haze due to agricultural fires will remain possible for the next few days across the nearshore coastal waters due to ongoing agricultural fires, mainly from El Salvador westward. An active monsoon trough will lead to moderate SW winds along with scattered showers and thunderstorms over the offshore waters of southern Central America and Colombia. Elsewhere, generally gentle to moderate breezes will continue through the next few days. Moderate long-period SW swell will continue through the middle of next next week with seas building to near 8 ft SW of the Galapagos Islands early next week. REMAINDER OF THE AREA... A ridge extends from 32N137W to across the Revillagigedo Islands to 15N115W. Mainly moderate trades prevail, while corresponding seas are mainly 4-7 ft. Several weak low pressure centers remain along the monsoon trough, producing active convection, with winds around 20 kt and seas 7-8 ft. Fresh to strong northerly winds offshore of southern California will send fresh northerly swell of 8-9 ft into the waters roughly N of 27N and E of 125W during tonight through Sun, decaying thereafter. Southerly flow to the south of the monsoon trough may strengthen to moderate to fresh late this weekend into early next week allowing for a growing area of 8-10 ft seas early next week, assisted by a set of long period SW swell. Meanwhile, the ridge will breakdown and shift W early next week as weak troughing develops across the N central waters, with broad cut- off low pressure developing along the troughing in the vicinity of 25N130W. Winds W of the troughing may increase to moderate to fresh helping to build seas to around 8 ft early next week. $$ Lewitsky
