Tropical Weather Discussion for the eastern Pacific Ocean from
the Equator to 32N, east of 140W. The following information is
based on satellite imagery, weather observations, radar, and
meteorological analysis.

Based on 0600 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through 
0830 UTC.

...INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/MONSOON TROUGH...    

A surface trough extends from Panama near 08N77W to 07N81W to 
09N107W. The ITCZ extends from 08N110W to 08N126W to 09N140W. 
Scattered moderate isolated strong convection is noted from 05N 
to 09N between 102W and 114W, from 06N to 10N between 123W and 
130W, and from 06N to 11N between 134W and 140W.

OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO...

Haze and areas of smoke from agricultural fires in Mexico may 
reduce visibilities near the coast from the Tehuantepec region 
to near Cabo Corrientes.

Northerly winds across the Gulf of Tehuantepec will diminish 
today, with another round of strong near gale force gap winds 
likely Sun through Mon night.

A N-S oriented ridge axis extends southward between 122W and 
145W. Gentle to moderate winds were noted on scatterometer data 
this morning across the entire region. Fresh strong winds west 
of southern California continue to produce 7 to 8 ft northerly 
swell west of Baja California, which will decay today. Gentle to 
moderate NW winds and 3 to 5 ft seas persist across the Mexican 
offshore waters south of 20N. 

OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, AND 
WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR... 

Haze and areas of smoke from agricultural fires in Central 
America may reduce visibilities near the coasts of Costa Rica, 
El Salvador and Guatemala.

Fresh easterly winds are possible across the Papagayo region 
today. Elsewhere, gentle to moderate winds will prevail during 
the next several days.

Large long period SW swell will reach the offshore waters of 
Central America, Ecuador and Colombia today, then slowly decay 
through early next week. Seas will build to 8 to 10 ft with this 
swell event, with the highest SW of the Galapagos Islands.

REMAINDER OF THE AREA...

Northerly swell associated with fresh to strong northerly winds 
west of southern California will decay today west of Guadalupe 
Island, N of 25N and E of 128W, with seas subisding to 6-7 ft. 

A N-S oriented ridge axis extends southward between 122W and 
145W. This ridge is supporting moderate trade winds across most 
of the tropical Pacific north of the ITCZ. Seas are mainly 6 to 
7 ft. Trade winds will diminish today as the ridge weakens due 
to a decaying cold front which will approach 30N140W by the end 
of the week. NW swell associated with that front will reach 
30N140W this evening with seas to 7 to 8 ft, then decay on Sat. 
Another cold front may reach 30N140W Sun night or Mon with 
another set of NW swell arriving in its wake.

Southern Hemisphere long period SW swell is crossing the equator 
E of 125W, with seas of 8-10 ft expected S of 14N later today. 
This swell will subside across the tropics below 8 ft by early 
Sun as it propagates toward Central America and southern Mexico.
