000 AXPZ20 KNHC 042130 TWDEP Tropical Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 2130 UTC Mon May 4 2020 Tropical Weather Discussion for the eastern Pacific Ocean from the Equator to 32N, east of 140W. The following information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations, radar, and meteorological analysis. Based on 1800 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through 2100 UTC. ...INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/MONSOON TROUGH... A surface trough extends from 09N83W to 06N85W to 07N110W. The ITCZ extends from 07N110W to 08N120W to beyond 05N140W. Scattered moderate to isolated strong convection from 04N to 10N between 85W and 115W. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO... A weak ridge reaches from 1024 mb high pressure centered near 30N131W through the Revillagigedo Islands. A recent ship observations and a scatterometer satellite pass confirmed pockets of fresh to strong NW winds off the coast off Baja California Norte. Seas are estimated to be 6 to 9 ft. The enhanced winds and seas are result of the pressure gradient between this ridge and low pressure trough over Baja California. A broad mid/upper trough has been deepening the surface trough. Moderate to locally fresh winds are also funneling near Cabo San Lucas. Light to gentle breezes prevail over elsewhere over the Mexico offshore waters. Seas are 4 to 6 ft in open waters. Smoky conditions have improved off the southern coast of Mexico, with the help of increased deep layer moisture and even a few showers. The fresh to strong winds will persist off Baja California Norte through tonight as the enhanced surface trough over the area persists. The winds will diminish thereafter as the gradient relaxes, but NW swell of 6 to 9 ft will persist off Baja California Norte into late week. Looking ahead, fresh to locally strong gap winds are likely to develop Wed and Thu nights through the Gulf of Tehuantepec. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, AND WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR... Fresh gap winds are occurring in the Gulf of Papagayo, with moderate gap winds taking place in the Gulf of Panama. Elsewhere light to gentle winds prevail. Seas remain 4 to 6 ft through the region. Visibility has improved and the smoke has lessened off Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala with the help of increased moisture and a few showers and thunderstorms. Gap winds will diminish through mid week, but nightly pulses of moderate to fresh winds are possible in the Gulf of Papagayo. Some SW long period swell may begin to approach the Galapagos Islands for the latter half of the week. REMAINDER OF THE AREA... A high pressure ridge north of 20N maintains moderate to fresh trades over the waters across the tropical waters west of 120W. Wave heights peak around to 8 ft from 10N to 15N west of 135W in mixed NW and SE swell. Elsewhere, moderate to locally fresh trades are noted near the ITCZ west of 110W. Gentle winds generally prevail east of 110W. A weak cold front has stalled near 30N140W and will dissipate tonight. NW swell to 8 ft will accompany the front north of 25N and west of 135W. Southern Hemispheric long period SW swell is likely to move N of the equator for the latter half of the week. $$ Christensen
