000 AXPZ20 KNHC 282037 TWDEP Tropical Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 2035 UTC Tue Apr 28 2020 Tropical Weather Discussion for the eastern Pacific Ocean from the Equator to 32N, east of 140W. The following information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations, radar, and meteorological analysis. Based on 1800 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through 2000 UTC. ...INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/MONSOON TROUGH... A surface trough extends from 06N77W to 05N80W to 08N89W. The ITCZ extends from 08N89W to 04N97W to 09N113W, then continues from 07N122W to 07N136W to 05N140W. The ITCZ is split by a surface trough that extends from 11N114W to 02N121W. Scattered moderate and isolated strong convection is occurring within 120 nm of the trough east of 88W, and from 04N to 10N between 114W and 121W. Scattered moderate convection is noted within 120 nm of the ITCZ between 92W and 105W, and between 127W and 135W. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO... A high pressure ridge extends from near 30N132W southeastward across the Revillagigedo Islands into the offshore waters off southern Mexico. A surface trough is analyzed over the Gulf of California. Recent scatterometer data show moderate winds over the far outer waters west of Guadalupe Island, as well as in the Tehuantepec region. Elsewhere, gentle winds prevail across the forecast waters under a relatively weak pressure pattern. A high pressure ridge will persist well offshore of Baja California and southern Mexico through this weekend. Strong gap winds are expected in the Tehuantepec region Thu night into Fri in the wake of a Gulf of Mexico cold front. Fresh sets of NW swell will build seas across the Baja California waters Thu night through this weekend. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, AND WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR... Earlier scatterometer passes showed fresh gap winds over the Papagayo region. Moderate to fresh southerly winds and scattered thunderstorms are associated with the trough referenced above that extends across the waters south of Costa Rica and Panama. Elsewhere, gentle winds are occurring between Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, with 3-5 ft seas in S swell. Fresh to strong gap winds will pulse over the Papagayo region through Sun. Moderate northerly winds will pulse across the Gulf of Panama for the next several days. Otherwise, tranquil marine conditions will persist through the upcoming weekend. REMAINDER OF THE AREA... A high pressure ridge extends SE from near 30N132W across the northern waters. Moderate to locally fresh NE to E winds are noted in recent scatterometer data between this ridge and the ITCZ. Elsewhere, moderate SE to S winds prevail south of the ITCZ, with some locally fresh winds noted in scatterometer data near the ongoing convection roughly between 110W and 120W. Seas are to 8 ft in S swell near 03S120W, and less than 8 ft elsewhere across the forecast waters. High pressure will dominate the northern waters through this weekend. A set of NW swell will move into the far NW portion Wed and quickly decay while moving SE through Thu. Another set of fresh NW swell will propagate southward into the waters west of Baja California Thu, building seas to 8-10 ft east of 125W by Fri. Looking ahead, winds and seas may increase offshore of Baja California Norte late Sun and Sun night as high pressure strengthens NW of the region. $$ B Reinhart
