000 AXPZ20 KNHC 081607 TWDEP Tropical Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 1517 UTC Sat Feb 8 2020 Tropical Weather Discussion for the eastern Pacific Ocean from the Equator to 32N, east of 140W. The following information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations, radar, and meteorological analysis. Based on 1200 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through 1500 UTC. ...INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/MONSOON TROUGH... A surface trough extends from 04N77W to 05N85W to 05N94W. The ITCZ begins near 05N94W and continues along 06N110W to 05N140W. Scattered moderate convection is from 06N to 09N between 93W and 99W. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO... A weak pressure gradient over the region support light to gentle variable winds over the entire forecast area with seas in the 3-5 ft range. These conditions will continue through early Sun. A low pressure will develop over southern California on Sun morning with an associated trough extending over Baja California Norte. This will tighten the pressure gradient across this region and adjacent waters, thus supporting fresh to strong SW winds in the northern Gulf of California Sun through early Mon. A cold front will develop from the low and move across Baja California Norte Mon morning. Fresh to strong winds will follow the front and affect the waters N of Punta Eugenia through early Tue. However, NW swell will support seas in the 8-11 ft range starting Sun night and prevailing through Tue morning. High pressure will build over the Great Basin on Tue and will support fresh to strong NW winds along the Gulf of California through Wed morning. Afterwards, winds along the gulf will gradually diminish through Thu as the pressure gradient in the region relaxes again. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, AND WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR... Light to gentle winds prevail across most of the forecast waters this morning, except for fresh to strong winds in the Gulf of Papagayo and fresh winds in the Gulf of Panama. Seas in both gulfs build to 7 ft while offshore seas in the 4-5 ft range prevail elsewhere. Fresh to near gale force winds will pulse across the Papagayo region through the middle of the week with seas building up to 10 ft. Fresh to strong winds will pulse in the Gulf of Panama through Tue with seas reaching up to 8 ft. REMAINDER OF THE AREA... A surface ridge covers the forecast waters N of 15N and W of 115W. Moderate to fresh trade winds will continue between the ITCZ and the ridge with combined seas generally in the 7-9 ft range. Trade winds will remain fresh west of 130W through tonight and increase again Wed night through Thu. A slow moving frontal system will approach the far NW waters this weekend and stall west of 140W early next week. Strong SE winds east of the front will build seas to 8-11 ft north of 20N and west of 135W Sun through Mon night. Looking ahead, NW swell will build seas to 9-12 west of 130W Tue through Wed. Expect increasing winds and building seas in NW to N swell in the waters north of 20N and east of 120W Sun through Mon night as a weakening low pressure system moves SE into the region. $$ Ramos
