000 AXPZ20 KNHC 080300 TWDEP Tropical Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 0300 UTC Sat Feb 8 2020 Tropical Weather Discussion for the eastern Pacific Ocean from the Equator to 32N, east of 140W. The following information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations, radar, and meteorological analysis. Based on 0000 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through 0230 UTC. ...INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/MONSOON TROUGH... A surface trough extends from 06N77W to 06N100W. The ITCZ extends from 06N100W to 06N110W to 04N121W to 05N129W to beyond 05N140W. No significant convection is noted at this time. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO... Wind speeds off the coast of Jalisco are diminishing this evening as the local offshore pressure gradient relaxes. Generally, moderate winds prevail over the waters north of Cabo Corrientes, while light and variable winds are found over the southern Mexico offshore waters. Fresh winds will briefly pulse over the Gulf of Tehuantepec tonight and Sat night. An approaching low pressure system will result in strong SW winds late Sun and Sun night in the northern Gulf of California, followed by strengthening winds and building seas west of Baja California late Sun night through Mon night. Associated NW swell will propagate across the Baja California waters through mid week while gradually decaying. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, AND WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR... Light to gentle winds prevail across most of the forecast waters this evening, except for fresh gap winds in the Papagayo and Gulf of Panama regions. Wave heights remain less than 8 ft. Fresh to strong winds will continue across the Papagayo region tonight through Mon night, then remain fresh through the middle of next week. Fresh to locally strong winds will pulse over the Gulf of Panama region tonight through Sun night, then diminish slightly early next week. REMAINDER OF THE AREA... A surface ridge extends from near 30N130W southeastward toward the Revillagigedo Islands. Moderate to fresh trade winds likely continue between the ITCZ and 20N, west of 115W. Combined seas in this region are generally 7-9 ft, based on earlier altimeter data. These trade winds will remain fresh west of 125W tonight into Sat, then diminish later this weekend. A frontal system will slowly approach the far NW waters this weekend and stall west of 140W early next week. Strong S to SE winds east of the front will build seas to 8-11 ft roughly north of 20N and west of 135W Sun through Mon night. Looking ahead, a set of NW swell will build seas greater than 8 ft in the waters west of 130W Tue through Wed. Elsewhere, expect increasing winds and building seas in NW to N swell in the waters north of 20N and east of 130W Sun through Mon night as a weakening low pressure system moves SE into the region. $$ Reinhart
