Gulf of Tehuantepec Gale Warning...High pressure building north of the area in the SW Gulf of Mexico will tighten the gradient across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and strong winds will funnel through the Chivela pass into the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Gap winds will strengthen to 25 kt tonight and increase to minimal gale force Tuesday. Pulsing gales are expected to continue through Friday night. This persistent high wind event will create a plume of 8 to 12 ft seas extending several hundred miles from shore. The monsoon trough extends from 08N83W to 06N95W. The ITCZ axis continues from 06N95W to 07N117W to 05N134W to 06N140W. No large areas of significant convection are noted. ...DISCUSSION... OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO... Please see special features for more on the Gulf of Tehuantepec gale force wind event. Elsewhere fresh to strong northwest winds will develop in the Gulf of California tonight, then continue through much of the week. Northwesterly swell off the coast of Baja California will subside below 8 ft this evening. A low pressure system and trailing cold front west of Baja California will stall and gradually dissipate tonight through Wednesday. OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA, AND WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR... Fresh to strong gap winds will develop in the Gulf of Papagayo this evening as high pressure builds north of the area and tightens the pressure gradient over Central America. Elsewhere, winds will remain 20 kt or less, with seas below 8 ft through early next week. REMAINDER OF THE AREA... A cold front extends from a 1015 mb low centered near 31N124W to 30N122W to 26N126W to 25N140W. Strong winds are found both ahead of and north of the cold front. This front will usher in a fresh set of northwesterly swell with seas of 8 to 12 ft propagating into the area. The low pressure will drift south of 30N tonight, then stall and weaken into a trough near 28N122W late Tuesday. High pressure building behind the front will support fresh to strong trade winds north of the ITCZ to 20N, and west of 125W through Thursday morning. $$ Mundell
