000 AXNT20 KNHC 140550 TWDAT Tropical Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 150 AM EDT Sun Apr 14 2019 Tropical Weather Discussion for North America, Central America Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, northern sections of South America, and Atlantic Ocean to the African coast from the Equator to 32N. The following information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations, radar and meteorological analysis. Based on 0000 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through 0520 UTC. ...SPECIAL FEATURES... ...Gulf of Mexico Gale Warning... A cold front has enter the western Gulf of Mexico. On 14/1200 UTC the front is forecast to extend from 30N88W to 24N91W to 18.5N95W. Northwest gale force winds are forecast S of 20N W of front with seas 8 to 10 ft. The monsoon trough extends from the coast of Sierra Leone near 08N12W to 01N20W. The ITCZ continues from 01N20W to 02S30W to the coast of Brazil near 04S38W. Scattered moderate to isolated strong convection is near of the ITCZ from 00N-06S between 29W- 42W. Isolated moderate convection is along the ITCZ and monsoon trough from 02N- 01N between 11W-24W. Scattered moderate to isolated strong convection is also moving off the coast of Liberia and into the Atlantic just south of the monsoon trough. GULF OF MEXICO... A cold front is entering the waters right along the Texas/Louisiana border near 30N94W and extends south and west into northeast Mexico near 25N97W. A pre-frontal trough is east of the front from 28N94W to 25N96W. Across the western and northern Gulf, clouds and showers are moving north and east. Additionally, along the front, strong thunderstorms are developing south of Louisiana and moving north. Ahead of the front, fog continues to be reported near southeast Louisiana and southward into the central Gulf with visibility between 2-4 nm. Smoke is also moving into the western Gulf, west of 90W, creating hazy skies. Moderate to fresh southerly winds are seen in the central and eastern Gulf ahead of the front. Behind the front, fresh to strong northerly winds are seen especially along the Texas coast. See above for more details on the developing gale in the southwest Gulf. The cold front will quickly move across the northwest Gulf tonight. It will reach from near Pensacola, Florida to 26N90W and to the eastern Bay of Campeche early on Sunday, then move to southeast of the area early on Monday. A brief period of minimal gale conditions is expected off the coast of Veracruz Mexico on Sunday. Otherwise, strong to near gale force northwest to north winds will follow in behind the front tonight through Sunday. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms, some with strong gusty winds, will precede the cold front as it moves across the Gulf. High pressure will build across the area in the wake of the front. CARIBBEAN SEA... Low-topped showers and clouds are quickly moving westward across the Greater Antilles. In the southern Caribbean, showers are also moving off of the coast of South America and into the southern basin and the Windward Islands. Otherwise, moderate to fresh trades are seen across the eastern and central basin with fresh to strong winds north of Colombia and in the Gulf of Honduras. Fresh to strong southeast winds in the far western Caribbean and Gulf of Honduras will continue through Sunday and diminish Sunday night. Fresh to strong winds in the south-central Caribbean near the coast of Colombia will continue through Thursday night and expand northward in coverage. ATLANTIC OCEAN... A cold front enters the waters near 31N29W and extends west to 24N60W. From that point, the tail-end of the boundary extends to the north to near 30N68W and stalls. A small surface trough continues to linger north and east of the Bahamas from 29N77W to 27N77W. Showers continue to move along the cold front within 50 nm of the boundary, including the tail-end of the front. Showers are also moving off of the east coast of Florida and into the Atlantic waters west of 72W. Showers can also be seen in a line from 31N- 19N between 25W-46W. Otherwise, high pressure continues ridging across the Atlantic anchored by a 1031 mb high near 34N56W. gentle to moderate easterly winds are in the southern Atlantic. Behind the cold front, northerly fresh to strong winds are seen. High pressure over the area will begin to shift east-southeast on Sunday as a cold front moves across the southeastern United States. The cold front will move off the coast of the southeastern U.S. coast on Sunday night preceded by fresh to strong SW winds. The front will reach from near Bermuda to Straits of Florida Tuesday, then weaken and become stationary from 27N65W to the northern Bahamas on Wednesday and dissipate on Thursday as high pressure centered north of the area shifts east- southeastward.
