FLORENCE Tropical Weather Discussion for North America, Central America Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, northern sections of South America, and Atlantic Ocean to the African coast from the Equator to 32N. The following information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations, radar and meteorological analysis. Based on 0600 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through 1200 UTC. ...SPECIAL FEATURES... The center of Tropical Storm GORDON at 04/1200 UTC is near 28.1N 86.2W, or about 165 nm/305 km to the ESE of the mouth of the Mississippi River. GORDON is moving WNW, or 300 degrees, 14 knots. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1004 mb. The maximum sustained wind speeds are 55 knots with gusts to 65 knots. Scattered to numerous strong rainshowers are within 75 nm of the center in the NE quadrant, and to the ESE of the center. Widely scattered moderate to isolated strong rainshowers are elsewhere within 135 nm to the NE of the center, and within 300 nm to the SE of the center. Isolated moderate rainshowers are in the remainder of the area, in Florida, to the east of GORDON. The maximum sustained wind speeds are 60 knots with gusts to 75 knots. Scattered to numerous strong rainshowers are within a 60 nm radius of the center in all directions. Scattered moderate to isolated strong rainshowers are elsewhere within 165 nm of the center in the NE semicircle. Isolated moderate to locally strong rainshowers are in the remainder of the area from 16N to 25N between 37W and 44W. An Atlantic Ocean tropical wave is along 21W from 20N southward. A 1007 mb low pressure is along the tropical wave near 10N. Scattered strong rainshowers are from 13N to 16N between 20W and 24W. Widely scattered moderate to isolated strong rainshowers are from 07N to 10N between 24W and 30W. A Caribbean Sea tropical wave is along 74W/75W, from 21N southward, through the Windward Passage to Colombia. The wave is moving through an area of upper level cyclonic wind flow, with an elongated NE-to-SW oriented trough. Isolated moderate to locally strong rainshowers are from 15N northward between 70W and 80W. A tropical wave is moving through the SW corner of the Gulf of Mexico, along 93W/94W from 21N southward, across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec of southern Mexico. Isolated moderate rainshowers are within 120 nm on either side of the tropical wave. ...MONSOON TROUGH/ITCZ... The monsoon trough passes through the coastal sections of Senegal near 15N17W, to a 1007 mb low pressure center, that is along a 21W tropical wave, near 10N. The monsoon trough continues to 09N26W and 11N32W. The ITCZ is along 10N45W, to 06N59W in Guyana. Widely scattered moderate to isolated strong rainshowers are along the coast from 05N to 10N between land and 16W. Isolated moderate to locally strong rainshowers are from 03N to 10N between 35W and 60W, and from 02N south between 33W and 40W. ...DISCUSSION... GULF OF MEXICO... Please read the SPECIAL FEATURES section for details about Tropical Storm Gordon. An upper level trough is west of Gordon along 86W. Gordon is forecast to move NW during the next 24 to 36 hours. Upper level anticyclonic wind flow covers the rest of the Gulf of Mexico. CARIBBEAN SEA... An upper level trough extends southward from the Gulf of Mexico to Belize. Isolated moderate showers cover the NW part of the Caribbean Sea north of 15N and west of 80W. A tropical wave moving across Haiti will reach the western Caribbean Sea by mid week. Fresh to strong winds will continue near the coast of Colombia tonight. A relatively weak ridge north of 20N will maintain moderate to fresh trade winds across most of the region through the weekend.
