Wind advisories are in effect for portions of southeastern Arizona. Flash flood watches are in effect for southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 300 PM MDT (2100 UTC), the center of Post-Tropical Cyclone Newton was located over southeastern Arizona near latitude 31.6 North, longitude 111.2 West. The post-tropical cyclone is moving toward the north-northeast near 18 mph (30 km/h). A turn toward the northeast is expected before the remnant low dissipates. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional weakening is forecast, and the remnant low is expected to dissipate by late tonight. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1008 mb (29.77 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- WIND: Gusts to tropical storm force are still possible over portions of southeastern Arizona through this evening, especially in areas of high terrain. Wind speeds atop and on the windward sides of hills and mountains are often up to 30 percent stronger than the near-surface winds indicated in this advisory, and in some elevated locations could be even greater. RAINFALL: Newton is expected to produce additional rain accumulations of 1 to 2 inches across portions of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico through tonight.
