DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 300 AM MDT (0900 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Newton was located along the coast near latitude 28.7 North, longitude 111.8 West. Newton is moving toward the north near 17 mph (28 km/h) and a turn toward the northeast is expected over the next day or so. On the forecast track, the center will move over extreme northwestern Mexico this morning and into southeastern Arizona this afternoon. Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher gusts. Rapid weakening will occur today as the center moves inland, and Newton should weaken to a tropical depression later today and dissipate by early Thursday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 230 miles (370 km) from the center. A Mexican Navy station at Guaymas reported a sustained wind of 43 mph (69 km/h) with a gust to 66 mph (107 km/h). The estimated minimum central pressure is 988 mb (29.18 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- WIND: Tropical storm conditions will continue over portions of the warning area in mainland Mexico this morning, but winds should subside by this afternoon. Tropical storm conditions could spread into portions of southeastern Arizona later today. RAINFALL: Newton is expected to produce additional rain accumulations of 1 to 3 inches over the central portion of the Baja California peninsula. Newton is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, and possible isolated maximum amounts of 10 inches, over the Mexican state of Sonora. Moisture associated with Newton is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 1 to 3 inches with locally higher amounts over southeastern Arizona and southern New Mexico through Thursday. This heavy rainfall may cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides in areas of mountainous terrain. STORM SURGE: A dangerous storm surge is expected to produce significant coastal flooding near and to the southeast of the track of the center within the tropical storm warning area. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves. Elsewhere, elevated water levels are expected in areas of onshore wind. Water levels will diminish later today. SURF: Swells associated with Newton over the Gulf of California will begin to subside. NEXT ADVISORY ------------- Next intermediate advisory at 600 AM MDT.
