Northerly gales and high seas follow a cold front from the Florida Big Bend to the eastern Bay of Campeche tonight. A scatterometer pass from 0330 UTC indicated winds to 45 kt off Veracruz. It is plausible winds have been as high as minimal storm force through part of the day off Veracruz. Buoy 41055 near 22N94W in the southwest Gulf showed seas to 22 ft during the afternoon. Farther south, the longer fetch and duration of the winds supported seas building at least as high as 27 ft. A Jason altimeter pass from around 0025 UTC indicated seas as high as 29.5 ft near 18.6N 94.3W. This is within 60 nm north of Coatzacoalcos Mexico, where gusts in excess of 50 kt have been reported. The front will move very slowly SE overnight then move SE of the Gulf Thu midday. Winds to gale force may persist off the northeast coast of Yucatan into Thu afternoon. Winds and seas will gradually subside through late week behind the exiting front. Gentle to moderate northerly flow will cover the Gulf Fri, with high pressure building across the northwest Gulf Sat and Sun. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... High pressure across the NW Atlc is supporting fresh trade winds over most of the Caribbean. A scatterometer pass from 23 UTC indicated fresh to strong NE to E winds in the northern entrance to the Windward Passage, and fresh easterly winds off Cabo Beata on the south coast of Hispaniola. A trough across Puerto Rico extending NNE into the adjacent Atlc will move W across Hispaniola Wed. The 23 UTC scatterometer pass showed a large area of fresh to strong trade winds over the tropical Atlantic waters east of the Leeward and Windward Islands in the wake of the trough. This will diminish E swell will cover the tropical north Atlantic through mid week. Strong northerly winds and building seas will follow a cold front entering the Yucatan Channel this evening. Fresh northerly winds and seas to 10 ft will spread across the northwest Caribbean into Fri behind the front, then diminish Fri into Sat as the front stalls and weakens from eastern Cuba to eastern Honduras. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... High pressure over the NW Atlc will shift ESE ahead of a cold front moving off the northeast Florida coast. The front will reach from near 31N74W to the central Bahamas and central Cuba late Thu night into Fri. Meanwhile a trough across the NE Caribbean and adjacent Atlc will move westward across Puerto Rico tonight, across Hispaniola Wed, and through the southern Bahamas by late Thu.
