074 AGXX40 KNHC 120630 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 230 AM EDT Sun Aug 12 2018 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... A ridge dominates the Gulf region anchored by a 1018 mb high located near 27N87W. This system is producing a gentle to moderate anticyclonic flow across much of the Gulf, with seas of 2 to 4 ft. Light to gentle winds and seas of 3 ft or less are expected over the NE Gulf through Wed. The high pressure is forecast to meander near SE Louisiana through Tue evening, while a trough is expected to persist over the NE Gulf. Moderate to locally fresh southerly return flow is expected across the west- central and NW waters, particularly between 0000 and 0600 UTC due to the pressure gradient between high pressure over the Gulf and lower pressure over Mexico. Seas are expected to build to around 5 ft with these wind speeds. A nocturnal trough moving off the Yucatan peninsula will induce a surge of fresh to strong NE to E winds in the Bay of Campeche each night. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... A recent scatterometer pass provided observations of minimal gale force winds in the Gulf of Venezuela, with fresh to strong winds extending to the north reaching the coast of Hispaniola. High pressure north of the area will continue to support fresh to strong winds over the south-central Caribbean through Tue. Sustained winds could reach minimal gale force along the coast of Colombia tonight into Mon morning, while frequent gusts to gale force will persist in the Gulf of Venezuela. Winds and seas over the Caribbean will subside during mid-week as the high pressure ridge over the western Atlantic weakens slightly and low pressure over northern South America fills gradually. Tropical waves will continue to move across the basin with little impact in winds and seas. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... A ridge will remain in place across the forecast waters during the next several days. Scatterometer data indicate moderate anticyclonic flow N of 23N, and moderate to fresh E-SE winds S of 23N, with the exception of fresh to locally strong easterly winds N of Hispaniola. Seas are 3 to 5 ft E of the Bahamas, 1-3 ft W of the Bahamas, and 5 to 6 ft just N of Hispaniola. These marine conditions are expected to persist most of the forecast period under the influence of the ridge. This will allow fresh to locally strong winds to blow off the northern coast of Hispaniola to include the approaches to the Windward Passage during the evening and night hours through mid-week. Seas are forecast to build to 8 ft by Mon night. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO...
