000 AGXX40 KNHC 240653 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 253 AM EDT Sun Jun 24 2018 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... An upper low centered over Tampico Mexico is supporting a few showers and thunderstorms currently northwest of the Yucatan Peninsula. The upper low will move little but weaken over the next couple of days, with occasional showers and thunderstorms persisting over the western Gulf accordingly. Meanwhile weak high pressure ridging extending from the southeast Gulf waters to Texas will drift to over the northern gulf early next week, supporting moderate to fresh SE return flow over the northwestern Gulf. A trough moving west off the western coast of the Yucatan Peninsula each night will further enhance overnight winds over much of the southwestern Gulf waters. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... A 0244 UTC scatterometer pass indicated fresh to strong winds pulsing around the Bay Islands off the coast of Honduras. A concurrent altimeter pass suggested seas to 6 ft in this area. Scatterometer and buoy observations also showed fresh to strong trade winds east of 80W, reaching near gale off the coast of Colombia. The stronger pulse of winds off Colombia is due in part to overnight drainage effects, but also follows in the wake of a tropical wave passing south of Jamaica currently. For the forecast, a series of tropical waves will move westward across the tropical north Atlantic and Caribbean basin through the middle of next week. Building high pressure over the western Atlantic will support increased winds and seas over the region, reaching near gale force off Colombia mainly at night with seas building to 12 ft. Looking ahead, the ridge will weaken toward mid week, allowing the areal extent of the strong trades to diminish by Thu while maintaining strong pulses off Colombia at night. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... High pressure extending westward from a high center over the central Atlantic to Florida will maintain gentle to moderate winds north of 22N and fresh south of 22N, becoming strong off Hispaniola at night through mid week. The high pressure will weaken and shift southward by mid week ahead of a weak frontal boundary off the Carolinas moving southward. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO...
