Scattered moderate to isolated strong convection continues over central and western Cuba, adding to the 10 to 18 inches of rainfall that entrained during the passage of Subtropical Storm Alberto over the weekend and Monday. Widespread flooding and the potential for landslides in rugged terrain will remain a concern through tonight. Strong thunderstorms will affect the N central Gulf today near a trough extending S of Alberto. Fresh winds and seas to 5 ft associated with Alberto are north of 28N along the Gulf coasts of Alabama and Florida. Winds and seas in the NE Gulf of Mexico will diminish further today as it moves further inland. Moderate to fresh southerly winds will persist over the eastern Gulf through tonight in the wake of Subtropical Depression Alberto, now north of the area. Winds will diminish by mid week across the basin as weak high pressure builds from the western Atlantic to the eastern Gulf. By late Thu, troughing will form over the western Yucatan each evening and drift over the southwest Gulf overnight through Sat. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... Scattered moderate convection is S of Cuba from 16N-20N between 81W-83W. Elsewhere, isolated moderate convection is over Central America from E Honduras to Panama. A recent scatterometer pass indicated fresh to strong SE winds within 300 nm to the south of the convection over the NW Caribbean. Elsewhere, 15-25 kt trade winds are over the central and E Caribbean E of 80W, with the strongest winds over the S central Caribbean. The fresh to strong winds are likely to continue near and to the south of the clusters of showers and thunderstorms from Cancun Mexico to central Cuba into this evening. High pressure in the central Atlantic will maintain fresh to strong trade winds over the S central Caribbean with moderate to fresh trades elsewhere. Strong E to SE winds are possible over the Gulf of Honduras by late Thu between the high pressure and troughing west of the area. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... Isolated moderate convection is between the Bahamas and Cuba and will persist through tonight. A broad surface ridge across the east- central Atlantic is anchored by a 1026 mb high centered near 29N44W and a 1028 mb high near 32N29W. The pressure gradient between Subtropical Depression Alberto over northern Alabama and the mid- Atlantic ridge is producing fresh southerly winds W of 76W. These winds will diminish during the next several hours. A high pressure center will develop along the ridge northwest of the northern Bahamas by mid week as a cold front moves into the waters north of 26N and east of 70W through Thu, before stalling and dissipating along 25N Fri.
