A broad surface low pressure area interacting with an upper- level low is centered over the SE Gulf. A recent scatterometer pass indicates a weak cyclonic circulation near 24.5N85W with moderate to fresh NE winds within about 150 nm NW quadrant of the low center. Gentle to moderate winds prevail elsewhere. Seas are in the 3-5 ft range based on altimeter data and buoy observations. The area of low pressure will slowly move northward across the eastern Gulf of Mexico during the next few days. This system will continue to enhance rainfall across portions of Florida, the SE Gulf and the northeastern Gulf Coast during the next few days. Currently, an area of showers and tstms is affecting the SE Gulf. Winds and seas could be higher near thunderstorms. A weak high pressure center is forecast to persist over the western Gulf over the next 48-72 hours. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... Latest scatterometer data along with surface observations indicate fresh to strong trades over the south central Caribbean, particularly S of 15N, gentle to moderate SE to S winds over the western Caribbean, and moderate to fresh winds over the remainder of the Caribbean waters as well as the tropical N Atlc forecast zones. Seas are in the 7-9 ft range over the south central Caribbean, 5-7 ft over the north central and eastern Caribbean, and 3-5 ft over the western Caribbean. NE swell will maintain seas around 8 ft over the waters E of the Windward Islands through tonight. The fresh to strong trades will continue to prevail over the south-central Caribbean through Fri as a ridge persists N of the area. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... High pressure will prevail over the forecast waters through the forecast period. Latest scatterometer data provide observations of moderate to fresh winds across the waters S of 27N W of 70W, including the Bahamas and regional waters, and gentle to moderate winds elsewhere. Outside the Bahamas, seas are in the 5-7 ft range over the southern waters, and 3-5 ft over the northern waters. West of the Bahamas, 1-3 ft seas prevail. Moderate to fresh southerly winds are expected N of 27N and just off the Florida peninsula due to the pressure gradient between high pressure across the area and a low pressure moving slowly N across the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
