000 AGXX40 KNHC 241916 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 316 PM EDT Sat Mar 24 2018 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... Latest satellite derived winds and observed seastate along with surface observations indicate fresh to locally strong SE to S winds over the NW gulf as well as west of the Yucatan peninsula. Light to gentle winds prevail over the NE gulf, and gentle to moderate winds prevail elsewhere. Seas are in the 6-8 ft range over the NW gulf, 1-2 ft over the NE gulf, and 4-6 ft elsewhere, except for a pocket of 6-7 ft over the far S central waters. High pressure will prevail over much of the forecast waters through Tue. A trough will develop over the Yucatan peninsula each evening and shift westward across the southwest Gulf during the overnight hours through the forecast period. A cold front is s expected to move into the NW Gulf late Wed night into Thu, and slowly reach from south central Louisiana to the southwest portion of gulf by late Thu. There are timing differences in the models with respect to this front. Will lean towards the slower solutions for this forecast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely with this front as it will be followed by fresh to strong NW to N winds and building seas. Will await future model runs to see is there is more of a consensus with the timing of the front across the NW gulf as well as with the wind speeds behind it. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... Latest satellite derived winds and observed seastate along with surface observations indicate fresh to strong winds over the south central Caribbean. The overnight winds of minimal gale force near the coast of Colombia diminished to near gale force this morning at 12Z. Fresh to strong winds also prevail over the Windward passage as well as in the lee of Cuba. Gentle to moderate winds prevail elsewhere across the Caribbean waters as well as the tropical N Atlc waters. Seas are in the 8-12 ft range over the south central Caribbean, with the highest near the coast of Colombia 6-8 ft over the Windward passage, and 4-7 ft elsewhere across the Caribbean. Over the tropical N Atlc waters, seas are in the 6-8 ft range. High pressure ridge over the western Atlc will support fresh to locally strong trades across the south central Caribbean the next several days. Winds will pulse to minimal gale force along the NW coast of Colombia during the overnight hours through Thu. Undersea volcano Kick em Jenny, north of Grenada near 12.18N 61.38W, is in a state of unrest. The government of Grenada advises mariners to observe a 5 km or 3.1 nm exclusion zone around Kick em Jenny. Please see www.nadma.gd for additional information. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... Latest satellite derived winds and observed seastate along with surface observations indicate fresh to strong winds N of 30N, and gentle to moderate winds elsewhere. Seas are in the 6-8 ft range over the NE waters, 4-6 ft elsewhere outside the Bahamas, and 1-3 ft west of the Bahamas. A cold front will stall across the far SE waters by early on Sun, with high pressure building in its wake. Another cold front is expected to drop S of 31N in backdoor fashion beginning on Sun and weaken as it reaches the far southern portion of the basin Mon night into Tue, however, strong high pres that will build over the area will bring strong NE to E winds to the forecast waters Mon through Tue along with large northerly swells. The strong N to NE winds will be more concentrated over the far southern waters, including the Approach to the Windward Passage from late Mon night through much of Wed before diminishing to fresh NE to E winds into Thu. Strong NE to E winds are expected across the waters west of the Bahamas to the Straits of Florida from Tue through most of Wed. he main marine issue will be the large northerly swells expected to linger into Thu night E and NE of the Bahamas. Seas as large as large as 16 ft are possible over the far northeast section of zone AMZ115 on Wed before slowly subsiding Wed night through Thu night. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO...
