000 AGXX40 KNHC 090714 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 214 AM EST Tue Jan 9 2018 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... Low pressure centered just SE of Louisiana near 29N88W extends a cold front through 26N88W to 20N94W. Latest surface observations indicate moderate to locally fresh winds on either side of the front across the basin. Seas are 4-7 ft on either side of the front, except 2-4 ft across the SE third of the Gulf. The low will weaken as it drifts southeastward today, before meandering and dissipating to a remnant trough Wednesday. A progressive weather pattern follows as high pressure builds across the area Wednesday, and retreats eastward Thursday enabling another cold front to move into the NW Gulf by Thursday night. The front will rapidly shift across the forecast waters Friday, with fresh to strong NW-N winds behind the front, and minimal gale force winds not out of the question for the western Gulf Thursday night through Friday morning. A reinforcing front will move through the eastern Gulf late Friday night into early Saturday, with high pressure building in from the NW Saturday afternoon and night with more tranquil marine conditions. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... A surface trough extends from western Jamaica to the SW Caribbean, with high pressure over the Central Atlantic building across the central and eastern Caribbean in the wake of the trough. Latest surface observations show fresh to locally strong trades E of the trough, with mainly gentle winds W of the trough. Seas are 5-8 ft E of the trough, and 4-6 ft W of the trough, except 2-4 ft in the lee of Cuba. The fresh to strong trades will persist today, then will briefly diminish mid-week as the pres gradient slackens, before once again increasing by the end of the week. A strong cold will move into the NW Caribbean Friday night, reaching from eastern Cuba to southern Costa Rica by early Saturday. Fresh to near gale force northerly flow will follow behind the front, building seas to 6-10 ft. In the tropical N Atlantic, moderate to fresh trades will prevail through the next several days. Northerly swells of 7-10 ft will persist today, subsiding to 6-9 ft thereafter. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... The remnants of a frontal boundary extend from 26N65W to the SE Bahamas, with the remnants of another boundary extending from 29N65W to the northern Bahamas. Latest surface observations depict mainly moderate to fresh winds SE of the northern boundary, with fresh to strong winds within 120 nm NW of the northern boundary, and gentle to moderate winds beyond. Moderate to fresh trades are observed over the SE waters, except locally to strong N of Hispaniola. Seas are 6-10 ft, except 4-6 ft N of 29N and 1-3 ft inside the Bahamas. The boundaries will drift NW through the week with fresh to strong winds N of the northern boundary expanding across the waters N of 27N and W of 70W tonight through Wednesday. High pressure will build down from the central Atlantic in the wake of the boundaries with fresh to strong E-SE flow across the waters E of 77W and NE of the Bahamas by early Thursday, along with 7-10 ft seas. These conditions will persist through Friday before the next cold front moves into the NW portion Friday night into Saturday. The front will slow and remain W of 70W through the upcoming weekend with moderate to fresh northerly flow behind it. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO... .GMZ011...NW GULF INCLUDING STETSON BANK...
