000 AGXX40 KNHC 290737 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 337 AM EDT Sun Oct 29 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... Tropical Storm Phillipe remains a fairly disorganized system near Key West Florida, moving northeast into South Florida. Aircraft reconnaissance data and local observations along with an earlier scatterometer pass indicated some areas of strong winds however. Strong upper flow has sheared the associated showers and thunderstorms well to the northeast of Phillipe. Philippe will move rapidly out of the area this morning ahead a cold front moving across the Gulf and entering the southeast Gulf. Strong northwest winds follow the front, and seas are expected to build to 9 ft through tonight in the wake of the front. Meanwhile in the southwest Gulf, a scatterometer pass from 03 UTC indicated winds to gale force still active off Veracruz. A gale warning for that area was continued through the early morning as a result. Winds and seas will diminish into early next week as high pressure builds again over the northern Gulf in the wake of the front. SE return flow will increase over the western Gulf by mid week between the ridge to the N and NE, and lower pressure to the NW of the Gulf. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... Strong winds south of Cuba are starting to diminish as Tropical Storm Philippe, now north of the region, continues to move farther aways. Divergent flow aloft on the periphery of an upper low centered south of Puerto Rico is supporting a few showers and thunderstorms in the Mona Passage. A cold front is approaching the Yucatan Channel and will move into the the northwest Caribbean later today, followed by fresh northwest winds. The front will weaken into Mon, and will stall from eastern Cuba to eastern Honduras by late Mon and then become diffuse through mid week. Elsewhere, moderate to fresh trade winds will diminish by Sun as the tropical cyclone continue NE away from the region while weakening the pressure gradient. Trades will then increase by to moderate to fresh by mid week. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... Tropical Storm Philippe near Key West currently will move rapidly northeast from South Florida to north of the area through late today, reaching a position off the Carolinas tonight. This will be ahead of a strong cold front moving through the Gulf of Mexico currently, and will move off the Florida coast later this morning. Seas will build due to a combination of the tropical storm and the strong winds behind the front, but given how quickly these two features move across the region, duration for wave growth will be limited and thus maximum seas will be limited to around 12 to 14 ft. The front will reach a position from Bermuda to the Windward Passage by early Mon afternoon as winds and seas diminish across the basin. The tail end of the front will stall and weaken through mid week, eventually drifting to the NW as a trough across the southern Bahamas and gradually dissipating. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO... .GMZ023...SW GULF S OF 22N W OF 94W...
