000 AGXX40 KNHC 281801 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 201 PM EDT Sat Oct 28 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... A cold front extends from the western Florida Panhandle trough the central Gulf to the coast of Veracruz with fresh to strong northerly winds behind it, except gale force along the coast of Veracruz. Seas are mainly 7 to 10 ft behind the front, but will build to 8 to 14 ft in the SW Gulf this evening. Only a few showers and isolated thunderstorms accompany the front. Winds will diminish below gale force late tonight. Tropical Depression Eighteen is in the NW Caribbean moving toward the Isle of Youth, Cuba. The depression is forecast to strengthen to a tropical storm as it moves across western Cuba this evening. Tropical storm force winds would spread into the Straits of Florida and far SE Gulf where a Tropical Storm Warning is in place. The tropical storm will quickly continue NE offshore of the Florida Peninsula as the cold front sweeps across the Gulf. Winds and seas will diminish into early next week as high pressure builds again over the northern Gulf in the wake of the front. SE return flow will increase over the western Gulf by mid week between the ridge to the N and NE, and lower pressure to the NW of the Gulf. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... Tropical Depression is in the NW Caribbean moving toward the Isle of Youth, Cuba. The depression is forecast to strengthen to a tropical storm as it moves across western Cuba this evening. Numerous showers and scattered thunderstorms will continue to move across the Cayman Islands and Cuba during the passage of the system. The system will exit the area tonight as a cold front sweeps across the Gulf of Mexico. Fresh northerly winds will follow the front as it moves through the Yucatan Channel late Sunday. The front will weaken into Mon, and will stall from eastern Cuba to eastern Honduras by late Mon and then become diffuse through mid week. Elsewhere, moderate to fresh trade winds will diminish by Sun as the tropical cyclone continue NE away from the region while weakening the pressure gradient. Trades will then increase by to moderate to fresh by mid week. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... Surface troughing extends from the central Bahamas to across S Florida with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms across the area. Tropical Depression Eighteen is in the NW Caribbean and is forecast to strengthen to a tropical storm as it reaches western Cuba near 23.0N 81.8W this evening. The tropical storm is forecast to reach the NW Bahamas near 26.6N 78.5W Sun morning, then will quickly move N of the area near 31.5N 74.0W Sun evening. Meanwhile, a cold front moving through the Gulf of Mexico will move across the Florida Peninsula through early Sun. The front will move off the NE Florida coast following just to the W of the tropical storm. Seas will build due to a combination of the tropical storm and the strong winds behind the front, but given how quickly these two features move across the region, duration for wave growth will be limited and thus maximum seas will be limited to around 12 to 14 ft. The front will reach a position from Bermuda to the Windward Passage by early Mon afternoon as winds and seas diminish across the basin. The tail end of the front will stall and weaken through mid week, eventually drifting to the NW as a trough across the southern Bahamas and gradually dissipating. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO... .GMZ017...W CENTRAL GULF FROM 22N TO 26N W OF 94W...
