000 AGXX40 KNHC 110541 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 141 AM EDT Wed Oct 11 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas. ...GULF OF MEXICO... A cold front extending from Louisiana to near Vera Cruz Mexico will stall out from near the mouth of the Mississippi River to 26N95W to the Mexico coast near 18N94W by Thursday night. High pressure building southward over Mexico will support fresh to strong NW winds south of 25N and west of the front through today, becoming confined to offshore of Vera Cruz tonight into Thursday. Seas will build to near 8 ft tonight associated with these winds. The high over Mexico will weaken, and shift north of the area, and the stationary front will dissipate by Friday allowing for winds and seas to improve. During this time period the remainder of the Gulf will see mainly gentle to moderate NE winds and seas of 2 to 4 ft. By Saturday, winds will increase to 15 to 20 kt over the southeastern Gulf between high pressure to the north and lower pressures over Florida, as a surface trough currently over the western Atlantic reaches the Florida Peninsula. Expect an increase in showers and thunderstorms associated with this trough as it crosses from east to west over the southern Gulf basin through Sunday. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... Mainly light to gentle winds will prevail across the basin today with the exception of moderate to fresh winds off the coast of Belize, the Gulf of Honduras, the lee of Cuba, and Windward Passage through. A tropical wave moving across the eastern Caribbean is generating shower and thunderstorm activity over the NE Caribbean. The wave will move over central Caribbean waters today and tonight, and over the western part of the basin on Thursday and Friday. Winds and seas will freshen in the wake of this wave over the eastern Caribbean tonight. Then, fresh to strong trade winds area expected to occur briefly across the south- central Caribbean, including the Venezuela and Colombia basins Friday night after the wave passes. Seas may reach 8 ft with these peak winds. Another tropical wave currently along 41W/43W will reach the forecast waters along 55W by Friday night. Fresh to strong SE winds and seas of 8 to 9 ft are expected to accompany the passage of this wave. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... A ridge dominates the northern forecast waters while a trough extends NE from near Puerto Rico. The pressure gradient between the trough and high pressure N of the area is producing a large area of fresh to strong winds and seas of 8 to 10 ft, covering the waters from 25N to 30N between 62W and 72W. The combination of this trough and an upper low currently near 25N70W is generating active convection south of 27N and east of the Bahamas. The trough and upper low will move in tandem westward the next few days, with the trough reaching the Florida peninsula on Saturday. This will spread numerous showers and thunderstorms across the Bahamas and surrounding waters tonight through Friday. The strong winds and associated seas greater than 8 ft will diminish through Thursday night, as the high pressure north of the area weakens. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO...
