000 AGXX40 KNHC 171924 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 324 PM EDT Sun Sep 17 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas. ...GULF OF MEXICO... A thermal trough will develop each night over the northwest Yucatan peninsula, and move across the far southwest Gulf through early morning, supporting locally fresh winds and seas briefly reaching 4 to 5 ft. Elsewhere across the Gulf, weak ridging over the lower Mississippi Valley will support gentle to moderate easterly flow across the Gulf through late Fri with seas generally 1 to 3 ft. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... Tropical Storm Maria just passed to the west of 55W, about 400 nm to the SE of the Leeward Islands. Maria poses yet another threat to the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico through mid week as it strengthens to a hurricane and brings seas in excess of 30 ft. Interests in these areas should monitor the latest bulletins from the National Hurricane Center. Elsewhere, strong to near gale force winds over the south central Caribbean and Gulf of Venezuela have subsided to moderate to fresh speeds as the ridge between Jose and Maria weakens. A weak tropical wave passing south of Hispaniola will continue moving westward across the Caribbean and reach the Yucatan Peninsula on Wed. Moderate to fresh southeast winds will follow over the eastern Caribbean in the wake of Maria during mid to late week. A lighter wind regime will remain in place for the remainder of the basin during this time frame. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... Hurricane Jose has passed to the north of 31N and is currently located about halfway between Bermuda and the Carolinas, moving north. Jose will continue moving north of the region during the next couple of days. 12 ft seas associated with jose will move north of the area by sunrise on Tuesday. Seas in excess of 8 ft in mixed swell will persist north of 27N through late Tue. Weak ridging will build SW from the central north Atlc through the central Bahamas, but the reprieve from high winds and seas will be brief. Hurricane Maria will be moving across the far northeast Caribbean and Leeward Islands by late Tue. Strong winds and building seas on the northern periphery of Maria will accordingly impact the Atlc waters between the Leeward Islands and 22N. The current forecast for Maria calls for hurricane conditions starting in the Atlc coastal waters of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico starting late Tue, then continuing WNW with hurricane conditions possible for the Turks/Caicos and southern Bahamas by early Thu. Afterward, the forecast calls for Maria to turn toward the north into a weakness in the subtropical ridge created by the slow departure of Jose. This forecast scenario takes Jose on a more northward tracks so it stays to the east of the central and northern Bahamas. Given track and intensity errors increase farther out into the future, marine interests throughout the region should continue monitoring the latest bulletins issued by the National Hurricane Center on Hurricane Maria. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO...
