A thermal trough will develop each night over the northwest Yucatan peninsula, and move across the far southwest Gulf through early morning, supporting locally fresh winds and seas briefly reaching 4 to 5 ft. A weak surface trough over the central Gulf will support scattered showers and thunderstorms the next few days as it drifts slowly westward toward the western Gulf waters. Elsewhere across the Gulf, weak ridging over the lower Mississippi Valley will support gentle to moderate easterly flow across the Gulf through late Thu with seas generally 1 to 3 ft. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... Hurricane Maria is moving west of 35W, about 300 nm due east of Barbados. Maria poses yet another threat to the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico through mid week as it strengthens bringing seas in excess of 30 ft. Interests in these areas should monitor the latest bulletins from the National Hurricane Center. Elsewhere, strong to near gale force winds in the south central Caribbean and Gulf of Venezuela are noted on 0230 UTC scatterometer pass. These winds will diminish through the morning as a tropical wave currently south of the Mona Passage continues to move westward across the central Caribbean through Sun and across the southwest Caribbean through Tue. Fresh southeast winds will persist in the wake of Maria during the mid to late week. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... Hurricane Jose is about equidistant between Bermuda and the northwest Bahamas currently, moving north. Jose is supposed to move north of the region late Sunday, with associated 12 ft moving north of the area through midday Monday. Seas in excess of 8 ft in mixed swell will persist north of 27N through late Tue. Weak ridging will build from the central north Atlc through the central Bahamas, but the reprieve from high winds and seas will be brief. Hurricane Maria will be moving across the far northeast Caribbean and Leeward Islands by late Tue, with strong winds and building seas on the northern periphery of Maria impacting the Atlc waters between the Leeward Islands to 22N. The current forecast for Maria calls for hurricane conditions starting in the Atlc coastal waters of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico starting late Tue, then continuing WNW with hurricane conditions possible in the Turks/Caicos and southern Bahamas by early Thu. Afterward, the forecast is for Maria to move more northward staying to the east of the central and northern Bahamas. Given track and intensity errors that far out, marine interests throughout the region should continue to the latest bulletins from the National Hurricane Center on Hurricane Maria. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO...
