000 AGXX40 KNHC 110717 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 317 AM EDT Mon Sep 11 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas. ...GULF OF MEXICO... Hurricane Irma cross the Lower Keys yesterday and made landfall in southwest Florida yesterday evening. The hurricane is currently moving rapidly up the peninsula, and weakening. Recent altimeter satellite passes and buoy reports show seas up to 20 ft off Tampa, with seas 12 ft or greater extending westward to nearly the central Gulf. A recent scatterometer satellite pass indicated winds to strong tropical storm force off Tampa. These winds and seas will diminish through this evening across the Gulf as Irma continues to push inland and weaken. A weak pressure pattern will set up in the wake of Irma with mainly W to NW winds Tue turning more to the SW Wed then becoming light and variable with 1 to 3 ft seas across the basin through the remainder of the week. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... A recent scatterometer satellite pass indicated fresh southerly winds on the south coast of central Cuba along with a few thunderstorms, on the far southern periphery of a rainband associated with Hurricane Irma, now well to the north. An altimeter satellite pass indicated large seas just north of the Yucatan Channel, but also showed only 3 to 6 ft over the western Caribbean. Farther east, Hurricane Jose is centered around 330 nm north of the Mona Passage. A buoy in the Mona Passage indicated only 2 ft, evidence that large wave heights related to Jose yesterday over Atlantic passages in the northeast Caribbean have subsided. A tropical wave in closing in on Barbados this morning, and will push through the eastern Caribbean over the next couple of days. This, along with continued presence of Jose north of the area, will help maintain a relative weak pressure pattern over the basin, along with generally moderate trade winds and 3 to 5 ft. seas. Fresh winds will pulse off Colombia during late evenings starting tomorrow night. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... Two hurricanes continue to buffet the region. Hurricane Irma is moving northward across the Florida peninsula. While Irma is weakening, the hurricane will continue to bring tropical storm force winds along the near shore waters off the Florida east coast into the afternoon. Strong southerly winds seas of 12 to 20 ft will linger north of the northern Bahamas and off northeast Florida through late today. Hurricane Jose, currently about 330 nm north of the Mona Passage will move northwest to a position between the central Bahamas and Bermuda by tonight, then make a slow clockwise loop through Thu while maintaining hurricane strength. Seas in excess of 8 ft in mixed swell will persist over much of the region between the central Bahamas and Bermuda as a result. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO... .GMZ015...NE GULF N OF 25N E OF 87W...
