The main focus through late Monday will be the eastern Gulf of Mexico, as major Hurricane Irma, currently approaching the southwest coast of Florida near xx.xN xx.xW as of 1800 UTC. Irma is expected to rake the west coast of Florida tonight and Monday, delivering hurricane force winds to the far eastern Gulf mainly within 90 nm of the coast through Mon. Tropical storm force winds can be expected east of 86W into Mon afternoon, with seas to 12 ft reaching as far as 87W. Winds and seas will diminish rapidly across the eastern Gulf late Mon and Tue as Irma continues to push inland and weaken. A weak pressure pattern will set up in the wake of Irma with mainly W to NW winds Tue turning more to the SW Wed then becoming light and variable with 1 to 3 ft seas across the basin through the remainder of the week. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... Tropical storm force winds on the south coast of central Cuba have diminished as the center of Hurricane Irma closes in on the southwest coast of Florida. Farther east, large wave heights are likely in the Anegada and Mona Passages, related to Hurricane Jose centered about 120 nm to the north of the British Virgin Islands, heading the northwest. Strong southeast winds well to the southeast of Jose are noted in a recent scatterometer satellite pass to the east of the Leeward Islands. A tropical wave will pass west of 55W today, and enter the eastern Caribbean Mon bringing moderate breezes to the northeast Caribbean and Leeward Islands in the wake of Jose. Moderate southerly flow will persist into Mon as Irma continues northward away from the area. Elsewhere A weak pressure pattern will support light to gentle winds and slight seas through mid week. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... Two hurricanes continue to buffet the region. Major Hurricane Irma is approaching landfall over the southwest coast of Florida, and is expected to move northward along the west coast of Florida today into Mon, brining tropical storm force winds to the Atlantic coastal waters off the east coast of Florida through early Mon. Strong southerly winds seas of 12 to 20 ft will linger north of the northern Bahamas and off northeast Florida through late Mon. Hurricane Jose, currently about 240 nm north of the British Virgin Islands will move northwest to a position between the central Bahamas and Bermuda by Mon night, then make a slow clockwise loop through Thu while maintaining hurricane strength.
