000 AGXX40 KNHC 100726 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 326 AM EDT Sun Sep 10 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas. ...GULF OF MEXICO... The main focus for the next couple of days will be the eastern Gulf of Mexico, as major Hurricane Irma, currently off the coast of Cuba and due south of Marathon in the Florida Keys, starts making a gradual turn to the NNW across the Straits of Florida toward Key West. Irma is expected to rake the west coast of Florida through early Monday, delivering hurricane force winds to the far eastern Gulf mainly within 90 nm of the coast through early Mon. Tropical storm force winds can be expected east of 86W into Mon afternoon, with seas to 12 ft reaching as far as 88W. Winds and seas will diminish rapidly across the eastern Gulf through Mon night as Irma continues to push inland and weaken. A weak pressure pattern will set up in the wake of Irma, maintaining gentle breezes and 1 to 3 ft seas across the basin through the remainder of the week. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... Tropical storm force winds on the south of central Cuba will diminish shortly as the center of Hurricane Irma on the N central coast of Cuba continues farther north into the Straits of Florida. Farther east, large wave heights are likely in the Anegada Passage, related to Hurricane Jose centered about 120 nm to the north of the British Virgin Islands, heading the northwest. Strong southeast winds well to the southeast of Jose are noted in a recent scatterometer satellite pass to the east of the Leeward Islands. A tropical wave will pass west of 55W today, and enter the eastern Caribbean Mon bringing moderate breezes to the northeast Caribbean and Leeward Islands in the wake of Jose. Moderate southerly flow will persist into Mon as Irma continues northward away from the area. Elsewhere A weak pressure pattern will support light to gentle winds and slight seas through mid week. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... Two hurricanes continue to buffet the region. Major Hurricane Irma is moving across the Straits of Florida, and is expected to move northward along the west coast of Florida, brining tropical storm force winds to the Atlantic coastal waters off the east coast of Florida through early Mon. Strong southerly winds seas of 12 to 22 ft will linger north of the northern Bahamas and off northeast Florida through late Mon. Hurricane Jose, currently about 120 nm north of the British Virgin Islands will move northwest to a position between the central Bahamas and Bermuda by Mon night, then make a slow clockwise loop through Thu while maintaining hurricane strength.
