Hurricane Katia is near 21.6N 94.6W 980 mb at 11 AM EDT and is stationary. Maximum sustained winds 70 kt gusts 85 kt. Katia is forecast to strengthen as it makes a slow SW drift toward the coast of Veracruz Mexico, reaching 90 kt by late Thu before making landfall Fri and gradually weakening. Farther east, major Hurricane Irma Hurricane Irma is forecast to enter the eastern Straits of Florida Sat afternoon, then turn northward across the Florida peninsula Sat night and Sun, bringing tropical storm force winds to eastern portions of the Straits of Florida and Florida Bay in the far SE Gulf late Sat into Sun. This will bring tropical storm force or possibly even hurricane force winds to the eastern portions of Florida Bay and possibly portions of the SE zones. Depending on the eventual track and intensity of Irma as it moves northward up the Florida peninsula, hurricane conditions are possible in the far eastern Gulf early next week. Elsewhere, a frontal boundary that moved into the northern Gulf yesterday has stalled from Big Bend area of Florida to 26N94W and will gradually dissipate as it shifts northward through Fri. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... The main story for the next several days continues to be major Hurricane Irma, near 20.7N 68.3W 921 mb at 11 AM EDT moving WNW at 15 kt. Maximum sustained winds 155 kt gusts 190 kt. Irma is forecast to continue WNW today through the Turks and Caicos and southern Bahamas before reaching the Cay Sal by early Sat and taking a sharp turn to the north into SE Florida. Seas reached 22 ft at Buoy 41046 earlier this morning, about 210 nm NE of the storm center. This is part of a larger area of 12 ft seas north of Irma, including E to SE swell to the NE through W of it propagating well out ahead of the main wind field. This swell is hitting buoys to the N and NW and will begin to reach the E coast of Florida soon and then into Georgia and then South Carolina tonight through Fri with 5-7 ft swell initially at 17-18 secs. This will produce very large surge well in excess of 10-12 ft and with this wave length will runup upon the beach to cause significant beach erosion and potential coastal flooding. For more on Hurricane Irma, see hurricanes.gov. Meanwhile farther east, Hurricane Jose is near 14.9N 50.6W 986 mb at 11 AM EDT moving WNW at 16 kt. Maximum sustained winds 80 kt gusts 100 kt.
